About the presentation:
Exploring New Horizons in Viticulture: Challenges and Support for Farmers
As part of the event organized by Grape Connect in 2023, we had the honor of having the participation of prominent professionals from the wine sector, who shared their knowledge and perspectives on the current challenges in the cultivation of table grapes. We especially thank the Director General of the IUB, Mr. Panu Roca, for extending us the honorable invitation to be part of this crucial meeting for the future of viticulture.
New Challenges on the Horizon
Viticulture is an ancient practice, and as such, it has undergone countless transformations over the centuries. Today, we face new challenges that require an innovative and sustainable approach. The central theme of our discussion focused on the emerging challenges in growing table grapes and how we can provide robust support to farmers who are dedicated to this noble work.
Classification and Diversity in the World of Vines
During the presentation, a review was made of the classification system of vines, highlighting the importance of understanding the diversity that exists within this group of plants. Up to 10 different genera were mentioned, although our main focus was on the Vitis genus, while still recognizing the growing importance of other genera in the field.
Within Vitis, two key subgenera stood out: Euvitis and Muscadina. Euvitis, with 238 chromosomes, represents the diversity and complexity of the vines that we commonly find in viticulture. On the other hand, Muscadine, with 240 chromosomes, plays a crucial role in disease resistance, being a vital field of research and development to ensure the sustainability and health of our vineyards.
Supporting Farmers: An Unavoidable Commitment
We recognize that success in viticulture depends not only on the technical understanding of plants, but also on unconditional support for farmers. They are the backbone of this industry, and it is our responsibility to provide them with the tools, knowledge and resources necessary to overcome the challenges and thrive in their crops.
Conclusion
The event organized by Grape Connect has been an invaluable platform to discuss, learn and chart the way forward in viticulture. With the challenges and opportunities on the horizon, we are committed to working hand in hand with farmers, researchers and all stakeholders to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future in table grape cultivation.
